Description
Higher Hare Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century and restoration in the late 20th century. It is constructed of random rubble with local stone quoins and features a thatched roof that extends as a catslide at the rear, with coped verges and brick stacks at the gable ends. The building has a plan consisting of two cells and a cross passage, along with a coeval outshot.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with four bays. The first floor has 2-light casements, while the ground floor has 3-light windows, showing evidence of alterations to the window openings. There are three iron ties on the left end bay, and the central entrance is marked by a rendered, gabled porch. The rear elevation includes 3-light wooden octagonal mullioned windows.
Inside, to the right of the through passage, there is a chamfered lintel with a shelf above an open fireplace lined in brick, and a steeply chamfered beam that is probably reused. To the left in the kitchen, there is a chamfered heel with scroll stops and a chamfered lintel fireplace that has been cut. A timber-framed partition leads to the outshot, which contains an inserted stair that divides at the first level, likely from the 19th century. The roof features a collar beam construction.
