Description

This is a block of four cottages, originally six, dating back to around 1818. They were constructed as part of the planned layout of Newtown, Milborne Port, which itself dates from around 1818 and was reportedly conceived as a political strategy.

The cottages are rendered and have been colourwashed, with a thatched roof featuring hips, half hips, and gables. Brick chimney stacks are also present. Originally, each cottage had one bay, and they are arranged over two storeys. Number 43 has a lean-to addition to the front, sheltered by a catslide roof, and a semi-octagonal projection on its west gable. It features timber horizontal bar casement windows, with the lower windows having segmental arched heads. A side entrance is also present. Numbers 44 and 45 have been merged and now have mid-20th century timber casement windows across two bays, with a rendered, glazed, and thatched porch situated between them. Similarly, numbers 46 and 47 have been combined and include late 20th century small-pane casement windows. A rendered and tiled porch is located in the corner. Number 48 features two bays, the first of which projects, with small-pane casement windows from the mid-20th century, and a reconstructed stone and tile porch towards the rear of the east gable. The interiors have not been inspected.

While the windows have been altered and the cottages rendered, this terrace retains much of its original character, particularly in the roof, and effectively illustrates the initial design concept of Newtown. The buildings are primarily included on the list for their group value.
