Description
Hamdon Hill War Memorial is a First World War memorial built between 1920 and 1923. It is constructed from pecked ashlar Ham stone and features a three-square step base that measures about 4.5 metres wide and 1.5 metres high. Above this base is a cuboid plinth with one plain panel on each face and a simple cornice, topped by a stone obelisk that stands about 6 metres high. The names of the war dead are inscribed on the panels, and on the north face, there is an added bronze plaque listing the names of those who died in the Second World War. Additionally, a bronze wreath placed by the Prince of Wales, as Duke of Cornwall, is set on the north face of the obelisk, commemorating the memorial's unveiling on 19th July 1923. This memorial is a prominent landmark located on the spur of Hamdon Hill, within the Ham Hill Country Park.
