Description
A pair of gates with an overthrow, dating from around 1840, is located approximately 10 meters south of the Parish Church of St Mary in Bridgwater. These double full-height gates are made of cast iron and feature horizontal friezes at the centers and bases, each adorned with four large quatrefoils and closely spaced vertical rails in between. Above the gates, the railings are connected by pointed arches, each topped with circular-section pointed finials. The flanking columns, which have panelled plinths that support the gates, are hollow squares of a similar design. They hold up an ogee-arched overthrow that is decorated with a crocketed finial at the top, along with elaborate ornamentation of quatrefoils, trefoils, and scrolls on the intrados. A 20th-century lamp is positioned at the center of the overthrow, which is flanked by 20th-century restored railings.
