Description
Newport Cottage is a small house dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of coursed grey limestone rubble, although most of the right gable wall has been rebuilt in concrete block. The roof is thatched and half-hipped to the right, featuring a brick end stack on the left. The house has a two-room plan, with an entry leading to a heated hall/kitchen on the left side and a service room. It stands two storeys high and has a two-window range.
The original plank door, equipped with strap hinges, is set in a heavy pegged frame. Above the three original three-light casements with leaded lights, there are timber lintels, along with a 19th-century three-light wood casement on the ground floor to the right. To the left and rear, there are 20th-century lean-tos with pantile roofs.
Inside, there is a stop-chamfered bressummer, likely from the 17th century and reused, above an open fireplace that includes a bread oven. The ground floor features stone flags, while the first floor has wide floorboards. A waney-edged beam is present on the ground floor, and the roof is supported by a collar truss. Newport Cottage is a remarkably complete example of a small 18th-century house.
