Description

Durleigh Church is an Anglican parish church located on Durleigh Road. It dates back to the 11th century, with additions from the 14th and 15th centuries, and was substantially rebuilt in the late 19th century. The church is constructed of random rubble with slate roofs, featuring a coped verge topped with a cruciform finial and a saddleback tower. The structure includes a nave with a south porch, a west tower, and a chancel, showcasing Decorated and Perpendicular architectural styles.

The early 14th-century tower has two stages, with the upper stage rebuilt in the 15th century, and is adorned with an embattled parapet and gargoyles. The tower features a narrow 14th-century two-light west window and a two-light bell-chamber window to the west, each light having an ogee head and louvres. The nave is buttressed and consists of two bays, with a 13th-century two-light window on the south side and another 13th-century two-light window on the north side, along with a two-light Perpendicular window. There is a projection on the south side for a former rood stair, which includes a quatrefoil window.

The chancel contains lancet windows and single-light cusped windows, along with a priest's door and a two-light Perpendicular east window. The door to the porch features medieval-style ironwork. Inside, the church has plastered walls and tile floors, with 19th-century roofs. The tower and chancel arches date back to the 14th century, and there is a lower entrance to the rood and a medieval door. The church also has a 15th-century octagonal font, while most of the fittings, including pews and the pulpit, are from the 19th century, except for a Jacobean altar table. The chancel is enhanced by good 19th-century stained glass.
