Description
Pigeon House Cottage is a pair of semi-detached cottages that have been converted into a single dwelling, dating from around 1820. The building features red sandstone random rubble, which was probably originally rendered. It has stone lintels above the first-floor windows, red brick dressings, and quoins that stand proud and are alternately spaced. There is a dentil style brick cornice, a double Roman tile roof, and brick stacks at the gable ends.
The plan consists of a pair of single-cell dwellings that have been transformed into a two-cell layout. The structure is two storeys high with three bays, all featuring 20th-century three-light casements. The first floor windows are set under flat stone lintels that are incised with keystones, while the ground floor has segmental-headed windows in the outer bays. An inserted casement has replaced the original doorway of the right-hand cottage, with the entrance now located on the left side, accessed through a ribbed door that includes an inserted light and a pentice porch supported by wooden columns.
Inside, both gable end fireplaces retain chamfered lintels and intact bread ovens, with the stairs rising at the rear. It is notable for a pair of workers' cottages to have such decorative features, especially given their distance from a large house.
