Description

Sharow View, now housing County of North Yorkshire Social Services and Probation Services, is a brown brick building constructed in 1854. It features ashlar quoins and dressings, a slate roof with coped gables on cut kneelers, and stands on the site of the earlier Old Hall, which had been gifted by William Asislabie in 1776 for use as a poor house.

The building is eleven bays wide, with the central three bays projecting forward and topped with two shaped gables, each featuring stone finials. Smaller shaped gables are also present on the flanking bays. The first floor has wood mullioned casements with glazing bars, apart from the three central windows, which are sash windows. The ground floor has wooden mullioned and transomed casements with glazing bars. A half-glazed door with glazing bars is situated within a four-centred arch, set in a slightly projecting surround with stone dressings. A vagrants' cell block was added in 1877.
