Description
The Post Office Sorting Office, located at 23 North Street in Ripon, was opened in 1906 and designed by architect JG Burrell. The building features a ground floor made of ashlar stone and a first floor constructed of red brick, topped with a slate mansard roof. It stands two storeys high with attics and is characterized by a heavy wooden cornice with modillions at the eaves.
Above the ground floor, there is a moulded band adorned with large sculpted bosses. The façade has four bays, each with sash windows that include glazing bars and tall double keystones. The ground floor openings are framed with jambs and voussoirs that alternate between plain and moulded styles. Two of these openings are doors, each with six moulded panels and an oblong fanlight featuring glazing bars. The front door is particularly notable for its segment-shaped ashlar hood, which is suspended by cast iron braces.
At the top, there are four flat-topped attic dormers, each with moulded cornices and angle pilasters. The building also has red brick chimney stacks topped with modillioned ashlar cornices, and two cast iron downpipes that feature large shaped rainwater heads.
