Description
Nos 26 and 27 on North Street in Ripon are mid-18th century buildings constructed of stucco with a slate roof. They feature stone coped gables with moulded kneelers and are two storeys high, comprising five bays. The central bay projects forward and is topped with a pediment. The first floor has 19th century sash windows with triple keystones, while the ground floor has a modern shopfront.
Inside, the front rooms retain 18th century plaster moulded cornices. One ground floor room features cornices with modillions, and the central joist has guilloche ornament, likely from the 19th century. The cornices in the ground floor rooms extend over the chimney breasts, suggesting that original chimney pieces may still exist behind modern pegboard. One first floor room includes a contemporary chimney piece with a shouldered wooden architrave and a late 18th century cast iron grate. This room also has a plaster keystone above the door, adorned with a female mask, possibly from the 19th century.
The staircase dates from the mid-18th century and features alternately turned and spiral-fluted balusters, a moulded handrail with a spiral curtail, and fret-patterned panels below each tread end, which continue to form a frieze below the landing.
