Description

Tan Hill Inn is a public house dating from the early to mid-18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. It is constructed of squared rubble and features an imitation stone-flagged roof along with stone chimney stacks. The porch has a sandstone-flagged roof.

The building has two storeys and five bays, with irregular flush quoins. There is a solid gabled porch located in the fourth bay, which has a replaced door on the right side. A doorway in the second bay has been blocked. On the ground floor, there are three late 20th-century casement windows set in tooled flush surrounds. The first floor features three identical windows, a blank fourth bay, and a small blocked window in the left bay. The roof has broken shaped kneelers and rebuilt end stacks.

Inside, the ground-floor room at the front right has a large stone fireplace with a corniced lintel supported by corbelled jambs.

There are 20th-century additions to the right return and rear of the building that are not considered of special interest. At 1,732 feet above sea level, this inn is said to be the highest public house in Britain.
