Description
The Church of St Agatha is a Grade II listed building located in Easby, built in 1881 by J Fowler for the Emerson family. This church was constructed as a private chapel and includes a mausoleum. It is made of snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features tiled roofs. The timber tower top is adorned with an iron crest, reflecting an Early English architectural style in a small scale.
The church has a west tower and a continuous nave and chancel separated by a dividing buttress. At the east end, there is an octagonal mausoleum, and a north vestry is also present. The west doorway in the tower is multi-moulded and pointed-arched, topped with a hoodmould that has carved stops. Above this, there is a timber bell stage and a shingled broach spire with an iron crown and vane. The nave and chancel are fitted with lancet windows, each with hoodmoulds.
Linking bays from the chancel to the mausoleum contain a north door and a south memorial cross dedicated to Anne Amerson, who died in 1880, set in a cusped gabled niche. The mausoleum features pointed blank arcading with foliate capitals and a pointed roof.
Inside, the church has a 2-bay nave and a raised 1-bay chancel, with a braced collar-beam roof and ashlaring at the eaves. There is an internal stair leading to a small west gallery. The interior includes an arcaded stone reredos and a carved stone pulpit. Notable stained glass windows depict figures of saints, prophets, apostles, and angels, created by Powell Bros of Leeds. Although the mausoleum was not accessible during the survey, it is reported to have shelves for coffins inside.
