Description

The bridge over the River Nidd at Summer Bridge is likely from the 17th century, though it was widened and extensively rebuilt in the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone and features two segmental arches. On the north (upstream) side, the voussoirs are recessed beneath a band, and there is a large triangular cutwater that serves as a pedestrian retreat at road level. The early stonework displays a fine selection of masons' marks. The parapet and flanking walls are made of coarsely-tooled masonry, while the downstream face consists entirely of 19th-century work.
