Description
The former mortuary at New York, Summerbridge, was built in the mid-19th century for the New York Burial Club. It is constructed from pecked-tooled sandstone ashlar and is a small, single-celled building that is built into a bank.
The western elevation is the only side fully exposed, while the other sides are mainly underground. The west elevation features an ornate triangular pediment with a central roundel framing a quatrefoil opening. Six evenly spaced blocks project from the upper face of the pediment, resembling merlons of a gabled, crenulated parapet, with their upper surfaces parallel to the pediment. Below the pediment is the building's only doorway, which has finely tooled and rebated monolithic lintel and jambs, although the door itself is missing. The remaining three sides are mostly buried, with a small window opening at eaves level on both sides, though the northern window is now buried. The eastern side has a plain coped gable end, and the roof is covered with modern softwood boards and roofing felt.
Inside, the walls are plastered and lime-washed, except for some scarring at the eastern end that indicates the position of a former bench or coffin rest. Each of the three walls without the doorway has a small rectangular alcove or cupboard placed roughly centrally. There is no ceiling, and it is unclear whether this has been lost or if the interior was always open to the roof.
