Description

The Royal Oak Public House is a public house dated 1752. It features a south front made of grey gritstone ashlar, while the rear and gable ends are constructed from coursed gritstone rubble. The building has a graduated stone slate roof and stands three storeys tall with three bays. It has rusticated quoins and a plinth. The central door has been converted into a window and is flanked by alternate stressed quoins and a double keystone. The first floor has a round-arched window set in an architrave with imposts and a keystone in the center, while the other windows have plain stone surrounds. The ground floor windows are sashes with glazing bars, while the remaining windows are 4-pane sashes. A projecting band at the first floor bears the inscription 'I' above the former entrance. The gable copings and end stacks, dated 1752, are present, with the left stack having been rebuilt. On the left return, there is a 20th-century entrance to the right of center, and the original entrance, now a window, is on the far left with a quoined surround similar to the front. The ground floor features two windows: a 20th-century window to the left of center and an 8-pane sash on the far right. The first floor has two 4-pane sashes in plain stone surrounds, while the second floor has a wide window with two small 4-pane sashes to the left and a sash window in the center, all within stone surrounds. The gable coping continues as a projecting band at the eaves level and across the base of the chimney stack.
