Description

The Thatched Cottage is a house that likely dates back to the 16th century, originally built with a timber frame and later encased in brick during the mid to late 17th century. It features post and truss timber framing, with brickwork in Flemish and random bond styles, and is topped with a Norfolk reed thatched roof. The building has two storeys, with the upper storey partly within the roof space, and consists of three bays in a lobby-entry plan.

The entrance includes a 20th-century glazed door set under a porch located between the first and second bays. The ground floor has tripartite sash windows with flush wood architraves, which are topped by soldier arches. On the upper floor, there are three pairs of 3-pane casements that are divided horizontally by the wall plate of the timber frame, with the upper windows positioned under swept dormers. A brick ridge stack is located opposite the entrance and on the right gable.

On the right side of the building, facing the road, there is an inserted window in a blocked doorway at ground level, and a 19th-century four-pane sash window in a flush wood architrave on the first floor to the left. Inside, there are substantial remains of the timber-framed structure, including the rear aisle, principal posts, and bracing to wall plates and tie beams, along with principal rafters and stud partitions. A passage runs along the back of the house in the former outshut or rear aisle, and a mortice for a horizontal aisle strut can be seen in the back of one of the principal posts.
