Description
The Vicarage, located on Park Street (north side) in Hovingham, is a late 18th-century building with alterations and extensions from around 1820. It features hammer-dressed limestone and a Welsh slate roof, along with cast-iron railings. The property originally had a central hallway entry, but the 1820 alterations included moving the entrance to an extension at the rear, which is accessed from the right gable end. There is also an additional cross wing to the rear left and a pavilion to the rear right.
The Vicarage is two storeys tall and has three bays. The central bay contains a replacement sash window with glazing bars beneath a flat stone lintel, in the position of a former doorway, flanked by 16-pane sash windows beneath keyed wedge lintels. The first floor also features 16-pane sashes beneath keyed wedge lintels. The gable has coping, and there are corniced end stacks.
Inside, there is a fine open-string staircase with carved undertreads dating from around 1820. The railings have anthemion heads and urn finials on the main posts. The gate piers are square-section with cornices and pyramidal heads, and the wall facing Church Street is approximately 2 metres high, coped and ramped up to the gate piers.
