Description

Ashla is a house built in the late 18th century to early 19th century. It features coursed rubble with a stone slate roof and is two storeys high with three bays. The south front has a central glazed door beneath a three-pane overlight, all set in an ashlar surround with herringbone tooling and interrupted jambs. The ground-floor windows are 16-pane sashes located in canted bay windows topped with flat lead roofs. The first-floor windows are sashes with glazing bars situated below deep lintels. The house has ashlar coping and brick end stacks.

To the left, there is a lower range of three bays that was converted from cottages in 1953, which is not of special interest. The rear of the house is made of rubble and features, on the ground floor to the left, a canted bay similar to the front, a central round-arched staircase window with glazing bars and bricks in the arch, and three bays of side-sliding sash windows with partially brick openings.

Inside, the house has doors with six fielded panels and a staircase with stick balusters. In the ground-floor room to the right, there is a marble fireplace with Ionic columns, which is likely not original to the house. The design of Ashla is very similar to that of its neighbour, Laurel House, which faces north.
