Description
Castle Mill is a weaving shed built in the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone and has a Westmorland slate roof. The building is two storeys high and features three rows of eleven bays. The north facade includes a 20th-century panelled door in the third bay, along with large windows on both the ground and first floors that contain side-sliding sashes with 63 and 49 panes. The roof is hipped. On the left side, there are small-pane windows on the ground floor, and on the first floor, there are iron loading doors with a projecting pulley rail above, accompanied by two small-pane windows to the right.
Inside, the ground floor has a stone floor and retains original timberwork throughout, supported by iron structures. The Castle Mill was originally used for cotton spinning but was converted to flax spinning in 1811. By 1832-1833, it was owned by John Vipont and Company and operated a 25 horsepower water-driven mill. Samuel Wilkinson significantly expanded the machinery in 1835, and by 1836, the mill employed 200 workers. In 1847, John Walton leased the mill and installed a steam engine and power looms, employing 423 workers by 1851.
