Description
Castle Mill Cottage is a house built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from gritstone and has a Westmorland slate roof. The building has four storeys, with one room on each floor. The main facade faces south and features a 20th-century extension that projects forward on the left side. A flight of stone steps leads to a first-floor entrance located in the right return of the main building. The main structure has three tiers of two-light windows, which have 20th-century casements and stepped hoodmoulds. There is a chimney on the right side.
On the rear, which faces the road, a 20th-century window has been inserted into the ground floor. The left return has a blocked arched opening into the ground floor or basement, which is now partly concealed by the roadway. There is also a tall blocked opening with a stone lintel on the first floor. The second and third floors feature small windows, with the second floor having a two-pane window and the third floor a one-pane window, both with projecting sills and large lintels. The building has inturned kneelers, and the right return includes a narrow but substantial external stack.
The character of Castle Mill Cottage suggests it may have originally been built as a small schoolhouse following the 1833 Factory Act. John Vipont, the proprietor of Castle Mill, agreed to provide a school for children under 13, allowing them to attend in two-hour shifts during the day.
