Description
Stepping Stones House comprises two houses, originally separate, now combined into a single dwelling with an art gallery. The earliest section, No 32, dates from the mid to late 18th century, while No 34 was built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
No 32 is constructed of coursed dressed rubble, featuring herringbone tooling, with ashlar dressings and a Westmorland slate roof. It is two storeys high with three first-floor windows. The facade features a plinth and chamfered rusticated quoins. The central entrance has a part-glazed door set within an architrave decorated with paterae and fluting on the frieze, and a cornice above. Ground-floor windows are canted bays with sashes containing glazing bars, each supported by a frieze with paterae and fluting. First-floor windows are 16-pane sashes in architraves, with a sill band running along the base. The roof features an ashlar coping with ball finials set on kneeler blocks. Brick end stacks are visible. The rear elevation includes a round-arched staircase window with decorative glazing bars, beneath a concrete interlocking tile roof.
No 34 stands to the left of No 32. Its facade has coursed rubble construction and a 20th-century pantile roof. The entrance features a part-glazed six-panel door, alongside a pair of studded board double doors set under a timber lintel. Two sash windows sit between the doors, and on the first floor are four-pane sashes. Brick stacks are present at the end of the left-hand bay and between the first and second windows. The left-hand bay of No 34 was originally part of No 36.
