Description
The Church of St Martin is a parish church built between 1861 and 1862 by architect G F Bodley. It is an early and exceptionally fine example of his work, designed in the Gothic Revival style and largely faced with ashlar stone. The church features a tall tower on the north side of the east end, topped with a saddle-back roof. It includes a nave with a high clerestory, an aisle, and a chancel, as well as large porches on the sides and a prominent rose window at the west end.
Inside, the church has a very lofty wooden wagon roof. The interior is decorated with stained glass and other features by Morris & Co., marking one of their earliest major commissions. The pulpit is adorned with ten painted panels by notable artists D G Rossetti, Ford Madox Brown, and William Morris. The chancel ceiling is decorated by William Morris and Philip Webb. The altar wall features blind bar tracery designed by Bodley, which contains the "Adoration of the Magi" by Edward Burne-Jones. Additionally, there is a reredos and roodscreen created by Bodley in 1889, along with a large organ case also designed by him, with paintings on the west side by Spencer Stanhope.
