Description

The Prince of Wales Apartments is a terrace block, originally designed as separate houses, situated on a corner plot where Prince of Wales Terrace meets The Esplanade, Scarborough. Constructed around 1840 to 1850, the building features stucco facades with a rusticated ground floor and iron balconies on the first floor. Initially, it presented three window facades separated by Corinthian pilasters extending to a main cornice above the third floor. Later alterations include the addition of a central Doric portico porch and modifications to the left-hand portion, where pilasters have been removed and a slate mansard attic has replaced the original parapet attic. A four-storey canted bay was added to the west end in the later 19th century. The majority of windows are sash windows, fitted with later glazing. The eastern end of the block, at the corner of the Esplanade, is three storeys in height, mirroring the overall height and incorporating a two-window facade with a five-window return to the Esplanade. The ground and first floor storeys are higher, displaying deeper rustication on the ground floor with round-headed windows. A balcony on the first floor is framed by Corinthian pilasters and features straight and segmental pediments. The building occupies a prominent position and completes an earlier phase of development along the Esplanade. It forms a group with the Esplanade Hotel, Belmont Road, numbers 1 to 19 inclusive on the Esplanade, The Villa Esplanade Hotel, and numbers 20 to 29 inclusive on the Esplanade.
