Description

Nos 9 and 11 Upgang Lane date to the late 18th century and were designed as a pair of three-storey houses. The exteriors are finished with cement. Each house features wide three-light sash windows with keystones at the ends of the elevation. Two square, projecting porches with cornices and blocking courses are centrally located on each house. Above these porches are Venetian windows; the outer lights are of normal height, but the central light consists of 40 panes, rising to illuminate the staircase. A one-storey, pedimented service wing, shared by both houses, projects centrally and incorporates an oval panel in the tympanum. The rear elevation is brick, with three storeys and a 3-3-3 arrangement of sash windows. Full-height, outer, canted bays incorporate double-hung sashes, and horizontal bands divide the storeys. A parapet runs across the front, topping the bays, and the roof is slate. A central, four-column glazed porch is present on the rear elevation. No. 9 has a roof of modern tiles.
