Description
Dalton House is a house dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with alterations and an addition made in the late 19th century. It is constructed of mainly coursed rubble and features stone slate and artificial stone slate roofs. The building has two storeys, a part cellar, and is arranged in a 1:3 bay configuration.
The main part of the house, located to the right, has a coursed rubble exterior and a stone slate roof, with a rear outshut. It has an offset plinth and quoins. The central entrance consists of leaved glazed doors beneath a four-pane overlight, all framed in an ashlar surround topped with a triangular slab hood. Above the entrance, there is a blocked window featuring a pseudo-armorial carving of a phoenix in flames, along with the ligatured initials "RCF" and the date "1892". The house has sash windows with glazing bars, projecting sills, and deep lintels, as well as ashlar coping and end stacks.
On the left side, there are two small cellar windows set into the plinth. To the left of the main house is a kitchen extension that has two lower storeys, with quoins on the left side, a board door in an ashlar surround on the right, and a bay of 16-pane sash windows. This extension also features ashlar coping and a stack at the left end. The left return of the building includes a blocked doorway and three semicircular wrought-iron hoops embedded in the wall.
Inside the kitchen extension, there are stone steps that were formerly external, leading up to the outshut of the main house. In the 19th century, Dalton House was used as a "London school" and was the home of William Lister, who built Dunsa Manor in 1842.
