Description

Holmedale is a house and attached cottage dated 1812. It is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and has stone slate roofs. The building is two storeys high and features two bays for the house and one for the cottage.

The house, located on the left, has an ashlar plinth and chamfered rusticated quoins. It has a central door made up of six reeded panels, framed by an ashlar surround with bases and an open pediment supported by cavetto brackets. Above the door is a circular ashlar plaque inscribed with "TB 1812." The house also features 16-pane sash windows with crown glass set in raised ashlar surrounds, an eaves band, and ashlar coping, with end stacks for the chimneys.

The cottage to the right is slightly recessed and has flush quoins on the right side. It includes a board door in a quoined surround and has a side-sliding sash window on each floor, both with deep dressed stone lintels that feature herringbone tooling and projecting sills. The cottage also has ashlar coping and end stacks. There is a 20th-century single-storey lean-to extension to the right, which is not of special interest.

Inside the house, there are doors and window shutters with reeded panels, a stone winder stair with moulded treads and wrought-iron balusters, and original cast-iron fire grates on the first floor. The cottage interior includes a cast-iron kitchen range with a reckon and kettle crane, as well as moulded joists.
