Description
The former Whitby and District Workingmen's Social Club and Institute, originally built as a mansion in the late 18th century, was once the finest residence in Whitby. It was converted into a hotel and significantly altered in 1870. The building has three storeys and a basement, constructed in ashlar stone.
The elevation facing Flowergate features a central section with three windows beneath an open pediment that slightly projects. The central window is set back and includes a three-light semi-circular window on the second floor, which completes the recess. The basement and ground floor have been modified for shops and a lounge. The lounge interior showcases four sash windows with eaved architraves, triple keystones, and square block rustications, leading into a hall flanked by Ionic pilasters. The first-floor windows are adorned with bands, quoins, eaved architraves, and cornices, with pediments over the outer windows and a central pediment supported by consoles. A balustraded apron is present on all windows except the central one. The top floor features an open pediment with a round window, a dentilled cornice, and a solid parapet that replaces the original balustrade. The building is topped with a tall 19th-century mansard roof covered in Welsh slates.
The elevation on Skinner Street is rendered and has three storeys with attics, including four dormers. It features two two-storey oriel windows with three lights each flanking three windows, one of which is blocked. The segmental arches are present except for the top floor, where the band continues across the cills. The central entrance door is a later addition.
Much of the interior decoration, which included panels by the school of Pannini, has been largely removed. The building is part of a group that includes the Whitby and District Social Club and Nos 1 to 13 Skinner Street.
