Description
Catterick Bridge is a bridge built in 1422, likely rebuilt between 1565 and 1590, with significant repairs in the 17th century and widening in 1792. It was commissioned by William de Burgh of Brough Hall, with the widening work carried out by John Carr of York. The bridge is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features three arches separated by triangular cutwaters that have hollow-chamfered tops, leading to canted pedestrian retreats. There is a decorative band along the structure, and the parapets have triangular coping that ends in circular bollards, with the downstream parapet curving outward.
The upstream side of the bridge reveals the older structure, which has two central arches with slightly pointed chamfered orders, while the outer arches are semicircular and faced with 18th-century stonework. The undersides of the earlier arches display masons' marks. On the downstream side, the Carr bridge has three semicircular arches and one segmental arch, featuring torus archivolts. There is a small barrel-vaulted chamber in the spandrel next to the southernmost arch on the downstream side. The contract for the bridge's construction is preserved in the County Record Office. Additionally, a chantry chapel dedicated to St Anne was founded in 1505 on the southeast side of the medieval bridge. Part of the downstream parapet was dismantled at the time of resurvey. The bridge is scheduled as an Ancient Monument and partly lies within the parish of Brompton-on-Swale.
