Description

Nichol's Stone is a memorial stone dated 1826, made of sandstone ashlar. It stands approximately 1 metre tall and 300 millimetres wide, featuring a rounded top. The front face is inscribed with the words "MAY 19, 1826 DO NO MURDER." The stone is said to commemorate a local farmer who, after seeing a cattle dealer driving animals to Leyburn Market, waylaid and killed him for the money earned from the sale. This man was the last person to be hanged at York and was buried in an unconsecrated grave just outside the churchyard wall of Finghall Church.
