Description

Nos 208, 209, and 210 on High Street in Northallerton is a coaching inn that has been partially converted into shops and is now a supermarket with offices above. The building dates from the late 17th century and was refronted in the mid 18th century, with further alterations made in the mid 19th and 20th centuries. Except for the front wall, the rest of the structure was demolished in 1979. The exterior is rendered and features a Welsh slate roof.

It stands three storeys high with five first-floor windows. On the ground floor, from left to right, there is a 20th-century doorway leading to the offices above, a 20th-century shop front that occupies most of three bays, and between the fourth and fifth bays, a former mid-19th-century doorway flanked by 19th-century canted bay windows. The first and second floors have a central bay that is narrow and slightly projecting, while the end bays are slightly recessed. The first floor features 19th-century canted bay windows, except for a sash window with glazing bars in the central bay. Above the former inn doorway, there is a frame for the inn sign on consoles, along with a wrought-iron frame for a hanging sign. The second-floor windows consist of nine panes that are unequally hung, except for a four-pane sash window in the first bay. There appears to have been a cornice beneath the render. The right side has ashlar coping, and there are rebuilt brick stacks between the first and second, third and fourth bays, and at the right end. This building was formerly known as the Old Golden Lion, where John Wesley preached during his first visit to Northallerton on April 15, 1745.
