Description

The Settle War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1925 by Henry Ross, made of white granite. It features a stepped pedestal on an octagonal plinth, with inscriptions on the front panels that read, "Pro Patria" followed by the names of the fallen, and below that, "No mean crown he wins/ who bravely for his country dies/ Eurypides." It also states, "Erected by public subscription/ to the honoured memory of/ those from the township of Settle/ who gave their lives/ for king and country/ in the Great War 1914 - 1918." The right panels include the words, "Also in the/ World War/ 1939 - 1945," along with names of those killed in this district, including US airmen.

This memorial, originally a First World War tribute with additions for the Second World War, is located in the Small Memorial Garden at the corner of Church Street and Langcliffe Road in Settle. It was constructed by Brassington, Sons and Company Ltd of Settle and was initially placed in the middle of the road at Bridge End, Settle, within a small enclosure formed by low stone walls and iron railings, accessible via an iron gate. The memorial was unveiled on December 6, 1925, by Brigadier General J.E. Edwards, and it was rededicated on November 7, 1948, before being moved to its current location at an unspecified date. This simple yet attractive memorial honors the dead of two world wars and is listed at Grade II.
