Description

Wingate Cottage is a house that likely dates back to the early 17th century, with its exterior rebuilt in brick during the early to mid-18th century, and further alterations and extensions made in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed and encased in orange-red brick laid in a loose English garden wall bond, topped with a pantile roof.

It is two stories high with a four-window front. The central entrance features a 20th-century board door, flanked by 20th-century three-light, small-pane casements, while the right end has a two-light, 12-pane horizontal sliding sash window. On the first floor, the two middle windows are two-light, 8-pane horizontal sliding sashes, and the end windows are 20th-century small-pane casements, with a three-light on the left and a two-light on the right. The ground floor openings have flat arches, and there are three-course raised bands at the first floor and eaves levels, with the eaves band being dentilled. The house has stacks at the right end and left of centre.

Inside, much of the timber frame is concealed, but braced posts can be seen at the rear of the middle room. The ground floor has chamfer-stopped beams in the centre and right end rooms, while the centre room features square-section joists. The left end room has a beam with an ogee stop. A splendid inglenook fireplace remains in the centre room, complete with a beehive oven and a timber fire door. The left end room boasts an attractive early to mid-18th-century stone fireplace with a moulded cornice shelf. On the first floor, the brick firehood is intact.
