Description
Burneston War Memorial is situated in the churchyard of St Lambert’s Church. It features a stone wheel-head cross adorned with a central rose motif and a foliate design on each arm. The cross is mounted on a square shaft that stands on a trapezoid plinth, which is placed on a single-stepped base.
The front face of the plinth has raised lettering inscribed with: THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ IN MEMORY OF/ (NAMES)/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE. Below this, on the step, it reads: OF THIRTY FOUR MEN FROM THE PARISH OF/ BURNESTON WHO SERVED IN H M FORCES/ THEY LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES.
An additional inscription for the Second World War has been added to the side of the plinth, simply stating: 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).
