Description

The Almshouses, now two cottages and a schoolroom, were built in 1680. They are constructed from coursed rubblestone and red brick, featuring ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has seven bays. It has a rubblestone plinth with chamfered ashlar coping that reaches the height of the ground-floor windows, and ashlar quoins at the corners.

In bays two and five, there are board doors set in quoined surrounds with four-centred arched lintels. Above each door is an ashlar tablet within a moulded surround; the left tablet has a Latin inscription and the date 1680, while the right tablet displays a coat of arms. Above both doors is an elliptical window framed in stone. The other bays feature two-light rendered brick mullion windows with various types of casements. The ground-floor outer and central windows have moulded brick segmental pediments, while the remaining windows have triangular brick pediments.

To the right of bay seven, there is a stone sundial with an inscription beneath it. Each end of the building has an external gable stack, with four circular windows in square stone surrounds, two on each floor. The structure also includes shaped kneelers and stone copings, along with one large brick ridge stack. The Almshouses were established by Matthew Robinson, the Vicar of Burneston and owner of Allerthorpe Hall.
