Description
The Parish Church of St Peter, built in 1846 and attributed to George Webster of Kendal, is a church constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof. It features a single vessel with four bays, a west tower, and a spire. The building includes a plinth, a sill string, a corbel table, and coping to the gables on deep kneelers, with a cross on the east gable. Buttresses that are chamfered and offset separate the bays, with angle buttresses at the east and west corners and the tower. The windows, set in splayed reveals, consist of two lights topped with a circle in the pointed head, with the west window being similar; the east window is more elaborate, featuring a stepped arrangement of three such windows. The tower has three stages, with a south doorway of one order. The third stage is splayed back to an octagon and includes a small louvred belfry opening on each side. The spire is a short octagonal stone structure. Inside, the church is very simple but maintains a unified nave and chancel, highlighted by a low three-decker pulpit at the head of the auditorium. There is a small organ gallery under the tower, and the roof has braced king-post trusses with clear lattice glazing.
