Description
Coniston Bridge and the adjoining causeway, built in 1763, is a public road bridge attributed to John Carr of York, who was one of the Surveyors of Bridges to the West Riding, or possibly remodeled by him at that time. The bridge is constructed of ashlar and features three round arches with high triangular cutwaters. There are decorative bands outside the voussoirs and another band at the base of the parapet, which is solid and slightly sweeps out towards the end piers. At the midpoint on each side, there is an additional pier topped with a pyramidal cap. The causeway extends for 75 yards to the east and is made of rubble, incorporating four low archways. The parapet of the causeway appears to have been replaced.
