Description

KIRBY HALL KIRBY HALL ESTATE SE 4461-4561 9/36 Outbuilding approx- imately one hundred and ten metres north of Kirby Hall GV II Summerhouse, now used as chicken or pheasant house. C18. Probably by Lord Burlington and Roger Morris, or John Carr of York. Orange-red brick in English garden wall bond, with plastered columns and slate roof. Lobed rectangle on plan. 1-storey, hexastyle Ionic temple front, with dentilled cornices to entablature and pediment, opening on to paved area. Front boarded up behind columns. Interior: semicircular niche at each end and shallow arched recess at rear. Summerhouse, in dilapidated condition at time of resurvey, is probably survival from the original Kirby Hall out- buildings.
