Description

KIRBY HALL CHURCH LANE SE 4460-4560 (east side), Kirby Hall Estate 10/30 Carriage gates and gate piers, pedestrian 15/3/66 gates, screen walls and railings at New Lodge (formerly listed as Gateway at Kirby Hall) GV II* Entrance gates. C18 carriage gates and gate piers, flanked by C19 pedestrian gates and screen walls. For the Kirby Hall Estate, with C19 alterations by Sir Henry Meysey-Thompson. Limestone ashlar walls and gate piers; wrought iron carriage gates and cast iron pedestrian gates and railings. Carriage gates of remarkable quality with delicately wrought design of coiled tendrils and rinceaux. Carriage gate piers of banded rustication, square on plan, approximately 4 metres high on high bases. Defaced carvings of triglyphs and rosettes on frieze beneath moulded cornice. Caps support ball finials on voluted pedestals. Date 1874 added to reverse of right hand pier, and monogram of HMMT to left. Pedestrian gate piers, approximately 3 metres high, similar but less ornate, with ball-and-pedestal finials. Quadrant walls, approximately .70 metre high with moulded plinth and coping, carry spiral-tipped railings and urn- finial standards. Terminal piers are square in section and have shallow pyramidal caps over moulded cornices.
