Description
The carriage gates and gate piers, pedestrian gates, screen walls, and railings at New Lodge are 18th century features, with 19th century alterations by Sir Henry Meysey-Thompson for the Kirby Hall Estate. The entrance includes limestone ashlar walls and gate piers, with wrought iron carriage gates and cast iron pedestrian gates and railings. The carriage gates are of exceptional quality, featuring a delicately wrought design of coiled tendrils and rinceaux. The carriage gate piers are square in plan, approximately 4 metres high, with banded rustication and high bases. They display defaced carvings of triglyphs and rosettes on a frieze beneath a moulded cornice, with caps that support ball finials on voluted pedestals. The date 1874 is inscribed on the reverse of the right-hand pier, along with the monogram of HMMT on the left. The pedestrian gate piers are about 3 metres high and are similar in design but less ornate, featuring ball-and-pedestal finials. The quadrant walls are approximately 0.70 metres high, with a moulded plinth and coping, supporting spiral-tipped railings and urn-finial standards. The terminal piers are square in section and topped with shallow pyramidal caps over moulded cornices.
