Description

The horse engine house, also known as a 'gin gang', is located approximately 10 metres north of the stables to Sawley Hall and dates from the mid-19th century. It is constructed from coursed gritstone rubble and features a blue slate roof. The building has two bays, with the west front showing the left bay open. There is a straight joint left of centre and a cart entrance on the right, which has a timber lintel under the eaves. On the rear (east side), there is another cart entrance on the left. The left return is attached to the south wall of a barn, which is not of special interest. The right return features a central board door with a large lintel and gable coping.

Inside, a curved wall with two ventilation openings divides the two bays and creates a semicircular end in the north bay, where the wheel is housed. The interior framing is supported below large cross beams, and the wheel has six wooden collars for horses. The roof consists of three queen-strut trusses, marked I, II, and III, which are reinforced with iron bolts. Although the machinery that connected to the barn has been removed, the gearing is now linked through to the south bay. It is believed that the engine house was used to pump the water supply to Sawley Hall in the early 20th century.
