Description

The Bield and Rose Garth is a house that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and was raised and subdivided in 1828. The structure features a cruck frame encased in sandstone at the front, with rubble on the sides and rear, and includes a part brick outshut. The roof is covered with pantiles and has brick stacks. Originally designed with a three-cell hearth-passage plan, it now has a 1½-storey, four-window front.

There is a four-panel door located at the left end, which is sheltered by a gabled porch made of brick, stone, and timber. A second four-panel door is positioned to the right of the center, also under a gabled porch. The end right window is a two-light, large-paned horizontal sliding sash, and all windows feature thin timber lintels. The gables are coped, and shaped kneelers are present. The building has end and center stacks. At the rear, a blocked door from the hearth-passage can be seen to the left of the outshut, and there is a fire window in the left gable wall, also under a thin timber lintel.

Inside, the ground floor room to the left of The Bield contains a fireplace with a chamfered bressumer, speer, and post. In the center room on the first floor, a pair of crucks can be seen supporting the collar beam.
