Description
The churchyard cross, located approximately 3 meters south of the Church of Saint Mary, dates from the early 9th century and is made of sandstone. It features a two-tiered chamfered octagonal base. The shaft of the cross is adorned with three rows of carved figures arranged in arcading, with a decorative band between each row. The top of the shaft is fluted. This cross is similar in style to those found in Wolverhampton and Dewsbury and is influenced by early Christian monuments from the Eastern Mediterranean, such as the Ciboricum of Saint Marks in Venice.
