Description

The Old Schoolhouse, originally built as a schoolhouse in 1744, is now a house. It was later extended, raised, and remodeled, with a schoolroom added around 1860. The building is constructed of squared sandstone, while the schoolroom features hammer-dressed sandstone. It has a pantile roof with brick and stone elements, including one rebuilt stack. The original structure had a two-cell, direct-entry plan, which was extended to the right, with the schoolroom added to the front left.

This two-storey building has a single window at the center front, with a two-storey, single window extension set back to the right and a projecting wing to the left. The central front features a plank door in a segment-arched opening, along with a similar door with a timber lintel in the extension. There are two-light, 12-pane horizontal-sliding sash windows with painted stone sills and painted timber lintels to the right of both doors and on the first floor. A datestone is positioned above the central door, and there are end and center right stacks.

The schoolroom wing includes a door with six recessed panels in the return front, set in a Tudor-arched opening on chamfered jambs, beneath a square, stopped hoodmould. The gabled front features two 2-light ovolo-moulded mullion and transom windows, also with square, stopped hoodmoulds. In the gable apex, there is a recessed, uncarved panel in a round-arched, chamfered surround beneath a floating cornice. The gable is coped with shaped kneelers and has a gable-end stack on corbels. At the rear, traces of a blocked fire window are visible to the center left. Inside, the room at the back of the schoolroom has exposed chamfered beams and square section joists.
