Description
The gate piers located approximately 75 metres north of the Church of St Paulinus were built in the early to mid-19th century. They are made of sandstone ashlar and feature wrought-iron gates. The two inner gate piers are square in shape, each with a plinth that has ovolo moulding. The shafts of these piers have rusticated bands that alternate between plain and vermiculated, with 1979 lettering reading "BROUGH PARK" on the central plain bands. Each pier has a frieze adorned with a large single patera and guttae, and is topped with a cap featuring three small paterae, which is surmounted by an urn draped with swags. The two outer gate piers are similar but have vermiculation only on the front and back faces, and their caps are plain with rounded tops. The screen walls are quadrant in shape and plain, with square terminals that have rounded tops. The gates are located in the outer interstices only, featuring plain bars with quadrant upper rails and two lower bracing rails of opposed segments. Originally located at grid reference 2217 9850, the gate piers were moved to their current site in 1979.
