Description

The Church of Saint Andrew is a church built in 1822, incorporating some medieval elements. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and has a stone slate roof. The building features a west tower, a three-bay nave, and a two-bay chancel. The tower has three stages divided by bands, with a board door beneath a depressed two-centred arch and a two-light quatrefoiled window above. The belfry windows are pointed single-lights, and the tower is topped with an embattled parapet.

The nave has two-light windows with quatrefoil tracery on the south side and square-headed windows with two cinquefoil lights on the north side. The chancel includes two-light Y-tracery windows on the south and a three-light window in the Perpendicular style on the east.

Inside, there is a 13th-century rectangular font with blind trefoil panelling and some nailhead decoration. The walls around the font and the chancel are adorned with 17th-century wooden panelling. Notable monuments include one for Mary Ingram, wife of Thomas Ingram of Temple Newsam, who died in 1656. This features a tomb chest with a recumbent effigy flanked by columns with acanthus capitals and looped draperies, with two angels guarding two infants in swaddling clothes and supporting an inscription at the rear. There are also two obelisks on an entablature.

Another monument is for Thomas Norcliffe, who died in 1822, featuring a white marble tablet on grey marble with a sarcophagus and an achievement of arms above, signed by M Taylor of York. Additionally, there is a bas-relief marble sarcophagus for Decima Hester Norcliffe, who died in 1828, with an achievement of arms below.
