Description

Barn. It likely dates from the 16th century, with alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The barn is timber-framed with outer walls rebuilt in coursed split cobbles and limestone quoins; it has a pantile roof with a stone slate eaves course. It is a tall, rectangular building of 4½ bays. The south side features a recessed boarded double door to the right of centre, a buttress to the right, and tall vents that have been blocked with bricks. The roof is steeply pitched. A low wheelhouse is attached to the centre of the rear elevation. Inside, four trusses remain, consisting of posts on padstones, curved braces connecting tie beams of heavy scantling and supporting queen struts with purlins and common rafters, some of which retain collars. Aisle plates connect the trusses to the outer wall plate, which survives on the south side. There are mortice holes in the back of the aisle posts for braces to former timber-framed outer walls. A stone partition wall runs under the second truss from the west end. Historical records from Fountains Abbey mention a timber-framed barn at Sutton Grange in 1541.
