Description
Selby College of Further Education, built between 1864 and 1865, was originally an armoury and drill hall designed by architect Edward Taylor of York and constructed by builder John Adams of Selby. The building features brown brick with yellow brick ornamentation and has a pitched slate roof. It is a single-storey structure with two-storey gabled wings. The wings have one-bay fronts and five-bay sides, with segment-headed sash windows that include glazing bars. The front of the building has modern windows, except for the central gabled bay, which features segment-headed carriage doors with ornamental wrought iron hinges and a two-centred arched light in the gable, adorned with brick sub-arches and Gothick glazing bars. The site was provided by Lord Londesborough, who laid the foundation stone on 21 May 1864, and the building was officially opened on 17 February 1865. It was built for the Selby Rifle Volunteers, which were established in 1862, with funds raised in 1863.
