Description

Bilbrough Grange is a house dating from the early to mid-18th century, with additions and alterations made in the mid- to late-18th century and the 19th century. A rainwater head bearing the inscription 'MS / 1755' is visible on the right gable end. The house is constructed of pinkish-orange brick with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof. The original part of the building consists of two storeys and five bays, to which a later 18th-century two-storey, two-bay addition was added to the left, extending as a wing to the rear. Further, lower two-storey ranges are located at the centre and right of the rear elevation, with a 19th-century extension to the right. The original block features a two-course plinth. A modern entrance has been created at the rear. There are 18-pane sashes in flush wood architraves set under flat brick arches and with stone sills throughout the building. Architectural detailing includes a three-course band above the ground floor and a six-course band above the first-floor windows. A low parapet is topped with ashlar coping and three ball finials. The roof is in two levels, with end, ridge and front stacks. A sash window with glazing bars and radial glazing in the head is present in the rear staircase gable. The interior of a ground-floor room retains 18th-century panelling, a fireplace with a moulded picture frame between recessed alcoves, a dentil cornice and shutters. A hall features moulded ceilings and a coffered arch. An open-well staircase has cast-iron balusters ornamented with paterae and a wreathed oak handrail. A room in the rear left wing boasts an elaborate cornice decorated with cupids playing amongst goats and grapes, and a fireplace decorated with urns and swags. Moulded cornices are present in several other rooms.
