Description

SCAMPSTON SCAMPSTON HALL ESTATE SE 87 NE 4/53 Stableyard buildings and attached wall, gates and gate posts approximately 30 metres north-east of Scampston Hall GV II Carriage house with loft; stables, workshop, yard walls, gates and gate posts. 1780 on datestone, with early C19 extension and later C19 alteration. Buildings of mottled brick in English garden wall bond with red and blue pantile roof. Yard wall of mottled brick with sandstone coping; cast-iron gates and gate posts. Wrought-iron overthrow. Buildings: 1-21-storey, 3-window range of carriage houses at left, with 12-storey, 1-window extension at left end; 1-storey, 9-bay range at right. Carriage house: 3 pairs of double doors and 3 small-pane pivoting windows,with painted stone sills,'to loft, all beneath segmental arches. Date panel recessed in raised surround over right carriage arch. Extension at left has 4-panel door with overlight at right of 16-pane sash with painted stone sill; pivoting window above. Segmental arches to all openings. Raised dentilled eaves band. Coped gables and end stacks. Right range: double board doors beneath segmental divided overlight at right of centre and wide board doors to left and right; narrow board door at left end. Small-pane pivoting windows between doors. All openings have segmental arches. Dentilled eaves course. Gabled louvred dormer at centre right. Yard wall approximately 1.6 metres high with cambered coping. Gateways: double carriage gates at centre with spear-tipped rails. Tapering octagonal gate posts with pointed tips. Segment-arched overthrow with spear finial. Single footgate is smaller version of the carriage gate but without original overthrow.
