Description
This is a small country house, now used as a home for the elderly, dating from 1894 with 20th-century alterations. The construction is of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, covered by a slate roof. The building features seven stone stacks, ashlar coped gables with kneelers and ball finials, and is designed in a Neo-Tudor style. It has cill bands and a first-floor band, spanning two storeys plus attics. Windows are predominantly ashlar cross mullion with plain sashes, with mullion windows in the attics.
The front elevation features four windows, with a slightly projecting gabled centre and a projecting porch to the left, incorporating a large four-centred arched opening with a plaque above. To the left of the porch is a three-light window with a single-light canted corner, above a two-light and a three-light window. Further to the left is a three-light half-canted bay window. Recessed to the right is a three-light window with a two-light window above. The north front has six windows, including an off-centre gabled projection with a five-light window above a three-light window, and a three-light window in the gable. Set back to the left are three single-light windows and, above, two two-light windows. Beyond this is a gabled projection featuring two-light windows and, above, a four-light oriel window and a two-light window in the gable. Recessed to the right are two single-light windows with a three-light window above. Another gabled projection has a three-light window, above which is a matching smaller window, and a two-light window in the gable. The south front has a recessed centre with a large six-light stair window. To the right is a gabled projection with a two-storey canted bay window and a three-light window in the gable. To the left is a three-storey narrow gabled projection with a single-storey service wing set back beyond.
The interior includes a large entrance/staircase hall with a glazed screen and stained glass entrance door. Panelled wainscoting is present, along with a segmental arched recess and two similar entrance arches supported by pairs of wooden brackets carrying coffered ceilings. A two-flight staircase has bulbous turned balusters and square newels, leading to a galleried landing with a similar balustrade supported on wooden four-centred arches with ornate columns. A large eighteen-light stair window contains stained glass. The dining room features a panelled dado, embossed frieze, and a wooden panelled ceiling, with a buffet alcove featuring a coffered ceiling, built-in buffet column with a columned top, and a matching wooden fire surround with an over-mantle. The drawing room, located to the left of the entrance, has a yellow and white marble fireplace, while the room to the right has a grey marble fireplace and a dado rail. Wooden door surrounds and panel doors are found throughout.
