Description

Nun Appleton Hall is a small country house built in the late 17th century for Thomas, the first Lord Fairfax. It underwent later additions and alterations around 1710 for the Milners, and further changes in 1920, which included a wing and tower to the right and an entrance porch, although these later features are not of special interest.

The house is constructed of reddish-orange brick with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. It is rectangular in shape, three storeys high, and consists of seven bays with a central breakforward in two stages. The building features a plinth and quoins. The entrance, located in an early 20th-century porch, has double doors with an overlight set within a pilastered surround topped with a hood. The ground and first floors have twenty-pane sash windows, while the second floor has fifteen-pane unequally-hung sashes, all with moulded ashlar architraves. The central first-floor window features an ornamental vase balustrade with acanthus consoles supporting its hood. There are remains of a first-floor band and a moulded second-floor band. The cornice is decorated with dentils and modillions, and the roof is hipped with stacks on the side and front.

Inside, the house has six-fielded-panel doors, some moulded cornices, and shutters on most windows, although the interior has not been fully inspected.
